Translation Contest IT>EN / IT>IR

The IIC has launched this week a translation contest. On the occasion of the International Translation Day, celebrated this week on 30th September, the IIC is waiting to read your original translation of one of the most famous arias in Italian Opera. The best translation of one from the Italian Opera masterpieces performed by Lyric Opera Ireland during Culture Night 2020 edition will be awarded two tickets to a Lyric Opera Ireland production to be held during 2020-2021 season. Terms and conditions below.

Arias to be translated into English or Irish (one or more texts of your choice):

  • Prenderò quel Brunettino
  • Quando m'en vo
  • Voi che sapete
  • Tu che di gel sei cinta
  • Di tanti palpiti
  • Mira, O Norma, a' tuoi ginocchi

Deadline for submissions is Friday 16th October 2020 by 5pm.

Each translation should be submitted individually to  with acknowledgement of receipt and should include the following details and documentation:
- Contestant's contact details
- Title of the chosen aria
- Translator’s category (junior, amateur or professional)
- - Submission form & Declaration of consent - GDPR compliant

Translators are allowed to submit multiple entries, but each translation should have a separate submission.

Submissions with no acknowledgement of receipt shall not be considered valid.

A panel of professional translators and experts chosen by IIC will assess all translations and select the best entries from each category; following that a jury chaired by the IIC director will choose one winning translation for each category.

Categories are junior (aged 13-20), amateur and professional.

The decision of the panel and jury are final. The work and deliberations of the panel and the jury are confidential. No individual marks will be released and no comments for each individual translation will be communicated.

The panel will apply the following criteria: accuracy of translation; ability to write fluently; creativity of translation solutions.

The panel may disqualify any translation that it believes has not been produced under fair and impartial conditions, for example if it appears that translation has been reproduced from published or publicly circulated translations.

The Winner will be announced on 25th October on our social channels and website. IIC will ensure that any personal data received is protected in accordance with the applicable law and GDPR.
