International Women’s Day // Italian Renaissance (of) women

According to the poet Ludovico Ariosto, “Le donne sono venute in eccellenza, / di ciascun’arte ov’hanno posto cura” (Orlando Furioso, XX, 2, 1-2; “What art so deepe, what science is so hie, / but worthy women have thereto attayned?” in the English translation of the poem by Sir John Harington, 1591). The topics of women’s worth and excellence in Italy will be discussed through the images, voices and words of female readers, writers, editors, musicians and artists who contributed to the development of the Italian Renaissance. We will be joined by Francesco Lucioli (UCD), Maria Canavan and Letizia Marcattili (National Gallery of Ireland), Francesca Placanica and Antonio Cascelli (University of Maynooth).
