A series of shared operatic experiences illustrated by live performance, presented by Deirdre O’Grady.
The series will demonstrate the outstanding features of the early to mid-19th century romantic Italian opera through the glorious melodies of Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi. History, its presentation and misrepresentation play a part in the rebirth of celebrated historical figures on the operatic stage.
The second presentation focuses on 16th century England and the operatic personae of the Tudor Queens, as portrayed by Donizetti. The fate of Anne Boleyn, Mary Stuart, and Elizabeth1 is played out against a backdrop of accusations, executions, and ‘Mad Scenes’. The operas Anna Bolena (1830), Maria Stuarda (1835), and Roberto Devereux (1837) combine both pathos and horror, and contain some of the most brilliant and technically difficult vocal music in the entire operatic repertory.
