Isabella Dalla Ragione is defined as an “arboreal archaeologist”. Together with her father Livio she searched for neglected fruit trees that no longer satisfied changing agricultural trends, market demands and modern tastes and created an orchard of endangered cherries, figs, apples, pears, peaches, quinces and other sundry species. Then they created the Archeologia Arborea project, which led to thirty years of passionate research for old local varieties of fruit trees and more than a hundred and fifty ecotypes salvaged; an invaluable biological and cultural heritage was thus saved from being lost forever, and is currently available for study, reproduction and a new diffusion. In 2017, Isabella Dalla Ragione was awarded the Nonino Prize for her work with Archeologia Arborea.
