The second screening in our Lunedì al Cinema series will take place on Monday, 22 September at 6 PM, in the Pavilion Hall of our Institute. “The Way We Laughed” (Così ridevano), directed by Gianni Amelio (1998), will be screened.
“Così ridevano”/ “The Way We Laughed” (124 min) won the Leone d’oro award at the 55th Venice International Film Festival. The story takes place over the period from 1958 to 1964 in Turin, city marked by a wave of internal migration, years during which Giovanni (Enrico Lo Verso), an illiterate worker and Sicilian emigrant, after joining his younger brother Pietro (Francesco Giuffrida) under the Mole, tries everything to encourage him to study, in order for him to earn his teaching certificate, but things end up taking a bad turn…
The film will be screened in Italian with English subtitles and will be preceeded by an analysis of its context and the directors’ work.
