A delightful combination of serious and comic events with a happy ending, Rossini’s opera La gazza ladra proved an instant success. Based on a true story of a French peasant girl convicted and hung for the apparent theft of jewellery, later located in the nest of a magpie, consternation and confusion give way to ecstasy and celebration. Set in a time of revolution, the presence of an army deserter, a village Mayor, a march to the scaffold and an execution aria contribute to the tension of the piece. Its Overture with motifs heard in the opera contains one of Rossini’s most famous crescendi.
