This year, on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin presents The Nativity Scene: The Legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi through Italian Design and Irish Craftsmanship.
Developed by the Embassy of Italy in Ireland and Italian Institute of Culture in collaboration with Andrea Vecera, Curator of the project, the Oifig na nOibreacha Poiblí/Office of Public Works (OPW), Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI), the exhibition will be on display at Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin, from 4 October 2026 to 6 January 2027.
The exhibition is conceived as a tribute to one of Saint Francis’ “inventions”: the presepe, or Nativity scene. It presents a collection of unique Nativity scenes, offering a diverse vision of this religious representation—not only as a spiritual symbol, but also as a profound and intimate part of Italian culture.
A selection of prominent Italian designers was invited to reinterpret the Nativity through their personal vision, using a variety of materials, with a preference for natural materials.
Each designer has collaborated with an expert Irish artisan to create a unique artwork, fostering a genuine exchange between Italian design and the excellence of Irish craftsmanship.
Through this creative dialogue, the project celebrates the values of community, collaboration, shared knowledge and solidarity deeply rooted in the legacy of Saint Francis.
The exhibition will be available for visits from 4 October 2026 to 6 January 2027 based on the following schedule:
