The border between Switzerland and Italy has been almost unchanged, except for minor tweaks, since Italy’s unification in 1861. However porous, the border divides two countries with very different political systems and, to paraphrase Churchill, the two countries are divided by a common language. The relationship that Swiss Italians have with the language they share with Italians has been at the forefront of Sergio Savoia’s writing career, and at the centre of the discussion around Frontaliers, a popular spoof comedy TV series and a film about Italian cross-borders commuters in Switzerland…
