Holocaust Remembrance Day 2023 – Theatrical reading of the melologue “Hierarchy and Privilege” on texts by Primo Levi

To commemorate this year’s the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, the Italian Cultural Institute is pleased to host the artistic duo Diana Höbel (actress) and Claudio Rastelli (pianist) for a poignant and passionate set to music reading of texts from Primo Levi‘s writings.

An event that provides an inside and most shocking perspective of the experience in the camps.
“Hierarchy and Privilege” is a reflection on the structure and dynamics of the death camps, constructed entirely from the words of Primo Levi and Hermann Langbein. The starting point of the dramaturgy are the essays, newspaper articles and reviews written by Primo Levi: from these heterogeneous materials emerges a complex vision on the nature of the camps, hellish places but organized according to “principles” that we can find in our societies: fear; hierarchy and privilege, reversal of the categorical imperative, that is, the use of the human being as a means and not as an end.

The project was co-produced with the Institute of Italian Culture in Ljubljana, where it makes its debut on the occasion of the Week of the Italian Language in the World on October 24, 2019.

THE TEXTS WILL BE READ IN ITALIAN LANGUAGE WITH ENGLISH SURTITLES

Claudio Rastelli

Composer, popularizer, teacher and pianist began his musical studies at the age of eight in Alessandro Materassi’s violin class. Years later he began studies in composition and piano, graduating in both at the Conservatory of Parma. He studied at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena with Franco Donatoni and at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole with Camillo Togni, undoubtedly the most important figure in his training as a composer. A pupil of Daniela Landuzzi for piano, after graduating he perfected his skills with Pier Narciso Masi. From 1991 to the present his music (chamber, for orchestra, for theater) has been performed in numerous European countries, the United States and Japan by soloists and ensembles such as Ex Novo Ensemble, Icarus Ensemble, Quartetto di Torino, AdM Ensemble, Duo Pepicelli, Frankfurt Strings, Wunderkammer Orchestra, Alfonso Alberti, Aldo Orvieto, Ciro Longobardi, Emanuele Arciuli. In addition to original compositions, his output includes reworkings (such as Disguises Nos. 1-2-3 from J. S. Bach, Little Melodies for Memory from B. Bartók, the play Babar from F. Poulenc, with Teatro Gioco Vita, which ran nearly 200 performances between Italy, Europe and the United States) and transcriptions from numerous composers (those of V. Ullmann’s Piano Sonatas are particularly appreciated). His compositions have been broadcast by RAI RadioTre and RAI 5; the latest broadcast is the melologue Sopravvissuti (from George Tabori), with Elio de Capitani and AdM Ensemble. He plans and participates in numerous outreach and in-depth activities by holding meetings, conferences, workshops and lecture-concerts for musical institutions, universities and schools. Every year hundreds of adults/youth/children participate in his proposals. He holds the chair of Piano Practice and Reading at the Conservatory of Trieste. Since 2001 he has been artistic director of the Amici della Musica di Modena.tri.
