Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Gioachino RossiniA series of screenings dedicated to Italian Opera introduced by Deirdre O’ Grady, Emeritus Professor of Italian and Comparative Studies University College Dublin. Conductor Claudio Abbado with Luigi Alva, Enzo Dara, Teresa Berganza, Hermann Prey, Paolo Montarsolo, Stefania Malagù, 140’Jean-Pierre Ponelle directed this film of Rossini’s comic masterpiece four years
before filming Mozart’s Figaro. The result was an irresistibly
entertaining and musically rewarding film, starring Herman Prey as
Beaumarchais’s scheming barber of Seville. The other main roles in
Ponelle’s Barber are taken by four of the most celebrated Rossini
interpreters of the past decades: Teresa Berganza, Luigi Alva, Enzo Dara
and Paolo Montarsolo.
