The great success of the actors of the Commedia dell’Arte
The phenomenal success of the Commedia dell’Arte in sixteenth-century Italy sparked a creative movement that crossed international borders, influenced countless artists, actors and directors and continues to prosper to this day. The success of these “revolutionary actors” will be examined as will their relationship with Goldoni and his Riforma del teatro italiano (Reform of the Italian Theatre). The conference will be followed by a video documentary (30 minutes in Italian, no subtitles) with the viewpoints of Dario Fo, Eugenio Barba, Tadashi Suzuki, and Maruizio Scaparro, and various scenes of the legendary Ferruccio Soleri in Giorgio Strehler’s adaptation of Goldoni’s Arlecchino servitore di due padroni at the Piccolo Teatro of Milano.A native of Tuscany, Mario Mattia Giorgetti, President of the Fondazione Teatro Italiano Carlo Terron and Director of the historic theatrical journal Sipario, graduated from Milan’s Piccolo Teatro in 1961. One of Milan and Italy’s most respected performers, he has also directed over eighty theatrical works and has collaborated with Rai for over fifteen years, both as actor and director.
