With “La battaglia di Algeri” (“The Battle of Algiers”, 121’), a 1966 film by director Gillo Pontecorvo, the Autumn cycle of “Lunedì al Cinema 2023” ends.
This last film, with a political-social theme, was entirely set in the city of Algiers during the Algerian War of Independence, which pitted the French army against the Algerian independentists led by the National Liberation Front between 1 November 1954 and 19 March 1962.
The film won the “Leone d’oro” at the 27th Venice International Film Festival and obtained two nominations for the Academy Awards for best director and for best original screenplay, plus another, two years earlier, for best foreign film.
The film will be screened in Italian with English subtitles and preceded by an analysis of the context and the director’s work.
