Monday 9 June we look forward to seeing you at our Institute for the screening of the movie “Kidnapped/Rapito” (2023) by Marco Bellocchio, that has won four David di Donatello 2024 Awards, and that is still competing in various festivals.
The film will be screened in Italian with English subtitles and will be preceded by an analysis of its context and the director’s work. Free entry with booking on our website.
PLOT: In 1858, in the Jewish quarter of Bologna, the Pope’s soldiers burst into the home of the Mortara family. By order of the cardinal, they have come to take Edgardo, their seven-year-old son who had been secretly baptized by his nurse. The papal law is unquestionable: he must receive a Catholic education. The Mortaras’ struggle quickly take a political dimension, but the Church and the Pope will not agree to return the child, to consolidate an increasingly wavering power…
THE DIRECTOR: Marco Bellocchio (Bobbio, 9 November 1939) is an Italian director, screenwriter, and producer. Among the most recognised auteurs in Italian cinema, Marco Bellocchio won the Leone D’Argento Prize for Best Director at the Venice International Film Festival for the movie La Cina è vicina. In 1991, he won the Orso d’argento, Special Jury Prize at the International Film Festival in Berlin for his film The Conviction. In 1999, he was awarded with an Honorable Prize for the contribution to cinema at the 21st Moscow International Film Festival, and in 2011 he was awarded with the Leone d’oro for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice International Film Festival. In 2021, he won the Palma d’oro at the Cannes Festival.
