Join us for the exciting upcoming online guided tour titled “Maria De Medici and the Birth of Melodrama in Florence,” which will take place on Zoom on Tuesday, 26 March 2024 at 6:30 PM.
In 1600, Florence celebrated the marriage of Maria de’ Medici and Henry IV of France, marking the birth of opera with the performance of “Euridice” by Ottavio Rinuccini and Jacopo Peri.
This event, held at the Pitti Palace Theatre with Bernardo Buontalenti’s scenic design, symbolizes the inception of Melodrama. The creative force behind this transformation was the Camerata de’ Bardi, a circle of intellectuals and musicians striving to revive the ancient Greek tragedy through a blend of spoken word and music.
Their efforts culminated in the innovative staging of “Euridice,” adjusting its tragic end for the wedding’s festive atmosphere and laying the foundation for the operatic tradition that would flourish across Europe.
The virtual tour in English with guides from The Grand Tour platform will be held on ZOOM, with limited slots available.
Reservation is mandatory.
