Second half of the nineteenth century, Mexico. Captain John Riley recalls the years when he fought alongside the Mexicans against the US army and the voluntary militias of Texas. In about two years of bloody battles, the country south of the Río Bravo loses, along with Texas, much of its territory. This is the story recounted in Quelli del San Patricio, by Pino Cacucci: a novel in Italian with Irish protagonists fighting on Mexican ground, chasing the dream of freedom and of a righteous homeland. Cacucci’s narrative binds together Italy, Ireland and Mexico singing the heroic deeds of the Batallón de San Patricio and telling an epic story of blood, values, memory and feelings.
The Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin and the Embassy of Mexico to Ireland invite you to meet Pino Cacucci for an evening dedicated to literature, ideals and history. After last year’s launch of the graphic novel Churubusco, we’ll return to the heroic adventures of the Saint Patrick’s Battalion, Captain John Riley, and his rebels.
