The ‘Years of Lead’ (1969-1988) – Meeting with Dr. Chiara Tedaldi (UCD)

Tuesday 12th September 2023, 06:30pm – Italian Institute of Culture, Pavilion Hall

This talk provides an introduction to left and right-wing terrorism, a type of political violence rooted in the emergence of extra-parliamentary movements supported by paramilitary organisations that ocurred in Italy during the 1970s. Its main objective is to foster a broader reflection on this period, marked by such a large number of bombings, assassinations, mutilations, and kidnappings (14,615) that it is commonly referred to as the ‘Years of Lead’.

The talk also touches on the pitfalls of state-prescribed engagement with the legacy of terrorism, focusing specifically on Italy’s reluctance to acknowledge the collective character of this violence, the harsh repression of its perpetrators, and the increasingly prominent role played by the relatives of the victims in shaping the Italian people’s understanding of this traumatic past and in deciding how it should be remembered.

In collaboration with University College Dublin.

The event is free and in English language. It will take place in the Pavilion Hall of the Italian Institute of Culture.
