We look forward to seeing you at our usual appointment with the virtual tour by the Grand Tour platform. The tour will have as its theme ‘The Medieval Mosaics of Rome’.
According to legend, the Basilica of St Mary Major was built in the 4th century AD after the Pope and a Roman nobleman named Giovanni dreamt of the Virgin Mary asking for a place of worship. On the morning of 5 August 354, they discovered that a miracle had marked the place at the top of one of the Seven Hills: the Esquiline, whose summit was in fact covered in snow!
But the Esquiline, now covered by late 19th century buildings, hides many other treasures: in the churches of Santa Pudenziana and Santa Prassede there are early Christian and medieval mosaics that are themselves worth a visit!
The virtual visit, in English, will be held on Zoom.
