Introduction by Deirdre O’Grady, Emeritus professor of Italian and comparative studies(UCD).
Set in England in the house of the merchant Tobia Mill Rossini’s first opera contains many future Rossinian musical and dramatic devices. The plot, in true Commedia dell’Arte manner tells of an older suitor Slook, an American/Canadian merchant, who seeks the hand of the young Miss Fanny. Female independence is established as she insists she won’t be treated as a piece of merchandise. The delightful and entertaining production by Luigi Sguarzina highlights aspects of the English Pantomime.
