Matilde:‘Oh! Quanto è mai ridicolo! Amor lo già molesta/Amor il cor gli rosica/Amor gli fa la festa’

‘Oh how ridiculous he is! / Love is already pestering him. /Love is gnawing at his heart/ Love is teasing him’

Matilde di Shabran is Rossini’s last contribution to the ‘semi-serious’ operatic genre. The public insistence on Romantic heroic melodrama caused the composer to abandon the purely buffo form. Set in the Spanish Castle of the misogynistic Corradino, the opera combines comic hilarity and darker dramatic moments. After a lively first act Corradino, convinced by Matilde’s rival of her infidelity, demands she be hurled from a cliff- top. The power and resilience of female beauty is illustrated through the bravura role of Matilde, while the virtuoso tenor role is performed in this Pesaro production by Juan Diego Flórez at the height of his powers. This is Rossini singing at its finest.
