Born in Naples in 1943, Domenico Starnone is an Italian writer of international standing whose works have consistently provided material for contemporary Italian film directors. He combined a long teaching career with an editing role in the cultural section of the Italian newspaper il manifesto. He won the prestigious Italian literary award Premio Strega in 2001 with his novel Via Gemito. His novel Ties (2014), published by Europa Editions and translated from the Italian by Jhumpa Lahiri, tells the story of a husband who leaves his wife and children and has to deal with the ties of married life. Family ties are again to the fore in his latest work, Scherzetto (2016), which tells the story of a grandfather and a grandson who know practically nothing of each other. Scherzetto will also be translated into English for Europa Editions by Jhumpa Lahiri (2018).
Enrica Maria Ferrara lectures in Italian Literature at Trinity College Dublin and IIC Dublin. She has published widely in the fields of Italian and Comparative Literature. Her latest monograph deals with the intersection of narrative and theatrical discourses in Calvino, Vittorini and Pasolini.
