La meglio gioventù is a 2003 Italian film directed by Marco Tullio Giordana. The title is inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s collection of poems of the same name. The film traces contemporary Italian history through the story of the Carati family from 1966 to 2003. The film follows two brothers, Matteo and Nicola, on their journey from their wild youth in the mid-1960s counterculture to parenthood and retirement in the early 2000s.

In the final part of La meglio gioventù the individual stories of the numerous characters intertwine with each other and with the history of Italy. The Carati brothers and their loved ones live out their lives in the North, the Centre and the South of Italy against a backdrop of a movement against psychiatric hospitals, Tangentopoli (Bribesville) and the outrageous crimes of the Mafia.
