Lyric Opera Productions presents “La Bohème” (Giacomo Puccini

La Bohème is surely the greatest operatic love story of all. The universally popular opera – a smash hit for over a century – is easy to love, and impossible to forget.

A lost key and an accidental touch of cold hands in the dark – so begins the tender romance at the heart of La Bohème. Rodolfo and his friends lead a typical student existence, dodging the landlord and carousing at the Café Momus. Everything changes when Rodolfo meets Mimì – the girl from upstairs – and they fall deeply in love. Their love story is given moving expression through Puccini’s score, from their first meeting in Act I, which contains some of the composer’s most exquisite music, to their poignant reunion in Act IV. These moments of emotional intensity are contrasted with the colourful spectacle of the Café Momus and surrounding streets in Act II, where Puccini presents a cross-section of Parisian society in all its noise and vibrancy. Giacomo Puccini’s romantic depiction of bohemian Paris, with a bitter sweet love story drawn from everyday life, has captivated audiences round the world, making La Bohème one of the best-loved of all operas.

Acclaimed Artistic Director, Vivian J. Coates brings the story to the evocative 1950’s, with set designs by John O’Donaghue and lighting by Alistair Kerr. As ever, Lyric Opera presents a first class cast of Irish and International singers including Marlena Devoe as Mimì from New Zealand, the vivacious Irish soprano Rachel Croash in a debut role as Musetta and Irish International tenor Aaron Cawley singing Rodolfo with baritone Ben McAteer returning to Lyric Opera from major success in the UK and Europe, supported by the Lyric Opera Chorus and Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Toby Purser.

Free pre-performance talks will happen an hour before every performance and presented by George Fleeton.
