An Italian Bloomsday // Jewish culture and music from James Joyce’s times in Trieste – with Moni Ovadia

Moni Ovadia, leading figure of the Italian cultural scene, reflects on James Joyce’s Trieste.
Ulysses, as James Joyce stated in one of his rare comments on the book, "is the epic of two races”: the Irish and the Jews. There was a large Jewish community in Trieste while Joyce resided there and the novelist Italo Svevo is said to be the model for Ulysses’ main character. Actors, musicians, and singers join forces to give the public a hint of what might have been the Jewish cultural life in Trieste at the beginning of the 20th Century.

This event is inspired by the planned live performance which was to have taken place in the NLI’s iconic Reading Room to celebrate Bloomsday 2020: the filmed performance will be screened on our Facebook page at 1pm and 6pm GMT.

Organised in collaboration with National Library of Ireland, Allianz and Corvino Produzioni.
