MapsBordersTerritories #6: Envisioning borders: thinking across border spaces with and through comics

What is there in (and beyond) a map? What do we talk about when we talk of borders? How do we define territories?

Google maps and maps of wonderlands. Cartography and strategies of war. Mapping ideologies and pandemics, continents, countries and counties, languages and races. Never ending fights over borders and identities. Maps of perceptions and of ideologies. Few things change as fast as maps. How do maps change us?
Maps, Borders and Territories is a project organized in cooperation with IIC London and Edinburgh.

In March 2020, as Covid-19 cases soared, the Swiss Federal Council imposed a lockdown across the country, closing the borders to all but essential travel. Meanwhile, in Italy, people’s lives were transformed and bounded following new geographical rules limiting movement. In this talk, run as a discussion, two geographers who use comics to narrate their research explore how graphic accounts help us to explore and share how intimate bodies, state and local borders and invisible enemies are made material during the pandemic crisis.

Juliet Fall is a Professor of geography at the University of Geneva, in Switzerland, specialising in border studies, feminist, political and visual approaches to studying social space. She has recently started publishing scientific papers as comics, using visual autoethnography.

Dr Giada Peterle is a cultural geographer, Lecturer at the University of Padova, in Italy, with and MA in literary theory & criticism and a PhD in geography. She is the author with Adriano Cancellieri, of Quartieri: Viaggio al Centro delle Periferie Italiane (2019, BeccoGiallo).
