Dublin book launch “Mario Luzi, Persone nel viaggio: Venti poesie tradotte da venti poeti irlandesi” edited by Alessandro Gentili

Tuesday 3 May at 6pm at the Italian Institute of Culture will take place the presentation of the book “Mario Luzi, Persone nel viaggio: Venti poesie tradotte da venti poeti irlandesi” edited by Alessandro Gentili.

Twenty amongst the greatest Irish contemporary poets have paid homage to Mario Luzi, by translating an anthology of poems scrupulously selected and proposed by Alessandro Gentili, editor of this volume.

During the book presentation at the IIC, Gentili will be in conversation with UCC Professors Daragh O’Connell and Dario Galassini. Some of the most renowned Irish poets, including Annemarie Ní Churreáin and Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, will interpret their own versions of Mario Luzi’s poems.

Alessandro Gentili was born in Massa Marittima, Tuscany, Italy, in 1954 and educated at Florence University. After graduation and military service, he taught Italian in Italian State Secondary Schools, and then from 1981 through 1985 was Assistant Lecturer in the Italian Department in UCC (University College, Cork.) In 1985 he returned to Florence and took up the position of Italian Lecturer at the British Institute of Florence, and later was appointed Head of Italian there. In 2000 he became Senior Director of the James Madison University Programs in Florence. He retired in 2019.

He has published an anthology of twentieth century Italian poetry, The Green Flame (co-edited with Catherine O’Brien), with Irish Academic Press, an anthology of Irish poetry after Yeats, Rosa di Macchia, with Passigli Editori in Forence; as well as, again with Passigli Editori, annotated editions and translations of Irish poetry into Italian, among them collections by John Montague (Il campo abbandonato), and Desmond O’Grady (Arcipelago). He has also translated two Italian editions of W.B. Yeats’s verse, I cigni selvatici a Coole and La rosa del mondo e altre poesie d’amore, with Passigli Editori. More recently with Passigli he has produced new Italian editions and translations of The Dead (I morti), Chamber Music (Musica da camera), Exiles (Esuli) by James Joyce, and has edited Italo Svevo / James Joyce, a collection of writings and essays by Svevo on Joyce. He has contributed to the Italian magazine “Poesia” with Italian translations of and critical essays on the poetical works of contemporary Irish poets, among them John Montague, Thomas Kinsella, Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, Thomas McCarthy, Leanne O’Sullivan, Caoilinn Hughes, Paula Mehan, Bernard O’Donoghue, etc., and continues to contribute to “Poesia”. He is the author of critical essays on Dante in English and in contemporary Irish poetry, namely “Reading John Montague sub specie Dantis”, “Il tragico caso di Ugolino nella versione del poeta irlandese Seamus Heaney”, and “Ugolino nell’Inferno di Eugene Lee-Hamilton”.

He is now working on an Italian edition of Selected Poems by James Joyce, for Passigli Editori, and on an Italian edition of Annemarie Ní Churreáin’s latest collection The Poison Glen, for Poesia / Feltrinelli.
