Giovedì all'Opera - Macbeth

Introduction by Deirdre O’ Grady, Emeritus Professor of Italian at University College DublinScreening of Macbeth, Giuseppe Verdi. Conductor Riccardo Chailly with Leo Nucci, Shirley Verrett, Anna Antonacci, Veriano Luchetti, Antonio Barasorda, Nicolas Sansier, Sergio Fontana, 132’Lady Macbeth: ‘Pien di misfatti è il calle della potenza’‘Full of misdeeds is the Path of Power’ Shakespeare’s Macbeth has a long and distinguished history in the cinema, ranging from the first silent versions of the 1900s to films by such authoritative figures as Welles (1948), Kurosawa (1957) and Polanski (1971). Claude d’Anna’s vivid imagining of Verdi’s operatic adaptation has much in common with that strong visual tradition, as well as preserving the values of opera on screen. The film was enthusiastically received in its cinematic release in 1987. Reviews in the French press spoke of d’Anna succeeding in creating both a film (“fantastic even without Verdi’s music”) and an opera, while Opéra International found the filming “always at the service of the music”. The director’s work was honoured with a Prix de l’Académie française. (Kenneth Chalmers)
