After Charles II regained the throne in 1660, Italian artists, musicians, even Catholic priests, descended on London, while its paintings, fabrics and foods were again imported. There was stiff competition with other European nations and native interests. Amongst the eye-witnesses to this tussle were diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn who bring it all vividly to life. Adrian Le Harivel, Curator of British Art at the National Gallery of Ireland, explores this lost world, evoking its atmosphere with some recorded music.
