The Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin is delighted to present “Anche in matematica importano i binari” (a play on words involving the binary system and railway tracks that does not translate into English), in collaboration with Irish Math Week and as part of the programme of the Week of the Italian Language in the World 2026.
Guido Ramellini, former teacher at the Italian School of Madrid and a founding member of MMACA, the Catalonia Mathematics Museum, will guide the audience on a journey of discovery through the magical properties of mathematics.
The event will revolve around the properties of the binary system. Particular attention will be devoted to number-based divination activities—ranging from simple to more complex ones—that allow for a degree of dishonesty in one’s answers, thereby illustrating how algorithms designed to detect potential errors actually work.
The session will conclude with a few versions of the game of Nim and a final “mathemagic” trick—the “Little Hummer”—intended as a farewell and a way to empower the audience.
The initiative is aimed at both children and adults, with the goal of bringing as many people as possible closer to the fascinating world of mathematics and its secrets.
The event will take place on Monday, 12 October, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm, at the Pavilion Room, and will be held in both Italian and English.
