The Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin is delighted to welcome Dario Ferrari for the presentation of his award-winning novel La ricreazione è finita. Praised by Antonio D’Orrico (Corriere della Sera) as “the best novel of recent times“, this brilliantly sharp and darkly humorous work has received widespread acclaim, winning the Premio Flaiano Narrativa 2023, the Premio Satira 2023, the Premio Mastercard Letteratura 2023, and being named Book of the Year by Fahrenheit Radio3 in 2023.
A mixture of satire, mystery, and social criticism, La ricreazione è finita follows Marcello, a thirty-something man reluctant to embrace adulthood, who unexpectedly finds himself pursuing a PhD in Italian Literature. Assigned a research project on Tito Sella, a little-known terrorist turned writer with a lost (or perhaps non-existent) autobiography, Marcello becomes increasingly absorbed by Sella and his life. As he navigates the intrigues of academia – marked by power struggles, intellectual pretensions, and bureaucratic absurdities – his reality begins to blur with Sella’s enigmatic story.
Dario Ferrari will be in conversation with Mara Josi (UCD), Serena Laiena (UCD), and Serena Vandi (TCD), offering insight into the novel’s blend of genres, its incisive exploration of generational insecurity, and its witty yet profound critique of contemporary academia.
