The Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin is glad to present the album launch of the Grammy-Award winning pianist Francesco Turrisi.
Vuci is an exploration of Turrisi’s Sicilian roots through a series of solo piano compositions inspired by the time he spent on the island as a child. It is a reflection on migration: that of his own family leaving Sicily, and the more recent one of people arriving on its shores. The album is enriched by a series of Sicilian archival recordings from the mid-20th century — work songs and lullabies — cast in a new light and accompanied by original piano music. It is also Turrisi’s homage to the Sicilian language, here presented through pre-recorded poetry read in Sicilian by Ester Pantano and Nino Provenzano, and in English by celebrated actor John Turturro.
The live multimedia show of Vuci was created in collaboration with video artist Laura Sheeran. It features archival photographs and videos documenting the traditions of tuna fishing (tonnara), alongside original material created for the show. These immersive video works draw audiences into the world of the album, creating a journey through questions of identity, belonging, and what Sicily means to those who leave, those who seek to reach its shores, and those who call it home.
The event will take place at the Project Arts Centre of Dublin, in the Space Upstairs room, on October 22 at 7:30 pm.
