We are pleased to conclude our spring LUNEDÌ AL CINEMA series with Martin Eden, directed by Pietro Marcello and based on the novel of the same name, starring Luca Marinelli.
After rescuing Arturo, the young heir of an industrial bourgeois family, from a beating, the sailor Martin Eden is welcomed into the boy’s home. There he meets Elena, Arturo’s beautiful sister, and falls in love with her at first sight. Cultured and refined, Elena becomes not only the object of Martin’s affection but also a symbol of the social status he longs to attain. At the cost of immense effort and while overcoming the obstacles posed by his humble origins, Martin pursues his dream of becoming a writer. Influenced by the aging intellectual Russ Brissenden, he is drawn toward socialist circles, a development that brings him into conflict with Elena and the bourgeois world she represents.
