TALK “CASTRATI, THE CELESTIAL VOICES THAT CAME AT A PRICE” – With art historian and musicologist Adrian Le Harivel – In English

EVENTBRITE COVERS (1)

With ancient origins as eunuchs, from the 17th century they were exclusively Italian and became the superstars of opera by composers of several nations. Castrati had voices quite distinct from other upper registers, between both sexes. Modern falsettos have attempted to recapture their special sound.

They could be temperamental and their personal lives often colourful, while they often stood out physically, as the operation performed when children often affected their physical development. Mozart cast them in 9 operas and 22 musical dramas. They continued in the Papal choir till 1903, when banned. One of the last of them was Alessandro Moreschi, who made two short recordings.

The meeting will be held in English.
