The theft of sacred relics in medieval Italy is the theme that Marco Papasidero will discuss during a meeting focused on “furtive translations”, the medieval stories that used to narrate the transfer of relics after their theft.
Thanks to the study of historical contexts, narrative dynamics, literary themes and anthropological aspects, we will reconstruct the richness and complexity of this tradition over the centuries, retracing the history of this specific aspect of the worship of the
saints, which is also the history of the culture and of the religious imaginary of the Middle Ages.

Bio
Marco Papasidero is Ph.D. in “History of cultural forms Euro-Mediterranean.” In 2017 he was the holder of a grant at the General Archives of the Carmelite Order. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Philosophy and Science of Education at the University of Turin, within the ERC project NeMoSanctI. He works on hagiography and the cult of saints. Among his
most relevant publications two monographs: Translatio sanctitatis. Thefts of relics in medieval Italy (Florence University Press, 2019) and “A laudi Deu. Luigi Rabatà between history, memory and devotional practices (Edizioni Carmelitane, 2019).
