GUIDED WALK “Dublin’s Palazzi: townhouses, banks & insurance” from Iveagh House to O’Connell Street – in English

Picture3

Wednesday 23 April 2025 2.30pm start at Iveagh House (St. Stephen’s Green) to O’Connell Street.

With the rediscovery of Italian historic architecture in the 18th century by Grand Tourists to Italy and the sophisticated patron, the language of the Palazzo was transposed to these Islands. In Dublin alone, there was a succession of grand townhouses from Provost’s House, right up to Victorian Iveagh House. Commercial headquarters, from the 1840s, followed the lead on College Green, where there had been takeover of the Palladian Parliament House, by filling the central spine of the city, with branches intended to impress and reassure about their stability, by recourse to the Palazzo look. Lost names still linger on the facades of buildings that may have radically changed use, still an important part of the streetscape.

The guided walk, in English, will be moderated by Adrian Le Harivel, former curator of the National Gallery of Ireland.
